Just as with the Westwall artwork, we wanted this mural to appear architectonic, as in one with the existing architecture. By cutting down the edge tiles, prior to fusing the image on,
we created a mural that ran edge to edge the entire span of the 90+ inch wide wall.
One third of the tiles are thick , embedded image under three sheets of clear glass and two thirds of the tile is image fused to the surface of 8" x10" ceramic tile. |

Directly above are 4 glass tiles, with varying sizes. Beside these are the 8" x10" ceramic tiles. The image as a whole remains readable, yet on close inspection the translation of image on either glass or clay creates a subtle difference. Below is a detail shot of how we used a mix of contemporary images from campus as well as archival imagery. This photograph of the Red Cedar River was taken in the early 1900's. On close inspection you can spot a fishing line glinting in the sun. |
